Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures. If performed properly, it is also one of the safest procedures. "In my opinion, the ideal candidate for liposuction is someone who has made an effort to get their dietary and exercise habits under control," explains Dr. Craig Hobar, notable Dallas plastic surgeon. "Patients don’t have to be at their ideal weight, but they should be working towards it. Almost everyone, regardless of their level of fitness, has resistant pockets of fat that don’t respond to exercise. In a woman, this is usually hips, outer thighs, abdomen, inner thighs, and the area right above the inner knee. In men, it is usually the abdomen and ‘spare tire’ area." Dr. Hobar combines ultrasonic liposuction and traditional cannula liposuction, using a fluid that constricts the blood vessels within the fat, so that the material removed is a purer fat, rather than a mixture of blood and fat. The ultrasonic form of liposuction liquefies the fat and is best used for the deeper pockets of fat or where the fat is more fibrous, according to Hobar. The traditional cannulas allow the liposuction to be performed more superficially and allow tapering into the surrounding areas so there is not an abrupt separation between the treated and surrounding areas. "I think it is important that patients understand liposuction is a surgical operation. I am opposed to any idea of this being an office procedure. I perform all liposuction procedures in a specialized cosmetic surgery operating room, where sterility is maximal, equipment is state-of-the-art, and anesthesia and patient’s comfort are optimal." |
